I run…

I’ve been running quite a bit - started about 2 months ago. Originally, I was just going from my apartment around a park once, about 1.5 miles.  Once I started enjoying it, I started going much longer.  The main issue is time - I could probably run 10 miles, but that would take the better part of 2 hours.  But spending an hour every other day running and being outside is great.  And I use the Nike+ thing, which makes neat charts and tracks speed, distance, and more.

So far I have enjoyed the program and found it very beneficial, but I think it lacks a few things - I’d like GPS, which I think may exist in the iPod Touch version of the program - I map my runs pretty closely, but GPS would be exact distances.

There are a number of features designed to encourage you to keep going, like resolutions, monthly goals, and challenges.  You can accept challenges posed to everyone out there or specific ones - I was challenged to an October run, which is odd in April, but in October I’m going to be taking part in it.  So… run.

Chicken Fried Bacon

It was the state fair. October, ‘08. There is an annual contest at the Texas State Fair, where large people create large piles of disgusting fried foods. This is the site of the creation of the deep fried hotdog, covered in corn bread on a stick. These rednecks know how to deep fry.

Deep fried grilled cheese
Deep fried latte
Deep fried Coca-Cola

And finally…

Chicken fried Bacon.

Probably the worst of all- and I tried them all (well, mostly). It was like taking that gross looking thick bacon from the chili’s commercials, dredging it in lard, battering it in fried, and submerging it in more boiling lard.

When it comes down to the facts, it was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever eaten. First, there is a crispy skin. Then a pocket of boiling hot oil, that explodes into your mouth and on your hands, burning your esophagus as you inhale it. The comes the leathery bacon itself- the boiling lard has rubberized the “meat”. As you digest the oil, skin, and leathery “meat”, you see your life flash before your eyes. Then you reach for another slice. And this time, you remember that there’s a ton of ranch dressing to pour over it.

How to lose friends on Facebook

I’ve discovered something amazing. Out of sheer boredom the other day, I posted a few pictures of my desk on Facebook - a couple shots of clutter. There were a few comments about needing to clean, and a challenge to myself to only post pictures with some sort of value. I’ve discovered the value of the boring images - they drive away the “friends” who aren’t really. It’s an amazing result - A few posts of crap and a status update, and I take up half their “feed” (or whatever its called now), and they are ready to cut me from their list.

Mario Kart Wii!

The Wii has had a strange life. I got one the day they came out and played the hell out of it - everyone wanted to play Wii Sports - we all oohed and ahh’d (thats an interesting expression to write) at the fact that deformed child versions of ourselves without arms could play tennis and bowl. Obviously we lost interest. I don’t really bowl. I also plowed through Zelda. Then the Wii, while great for occasionally playing Wave Race 64 or Super Mario World or some other classic, basically sat there. Last Christmas, they were still in incredible demand, I got Super Mario Galaxy. The game was amazing and completely captivating, but I beat it and now the Wii again collects dust. Finally theres something to keep me interested. In just 4 days, Super Smash Bros. Brawl comes out, and I will play the crap out of it. Not too much later, we get Mario Kart.

New to this version are motorcycles and online play.  I’m very interested to see how motion control translates, and I’m interested to see how difficult it is to use the pack-in “Steering Wheel” - I’ve heard it’s kind of annoying because there is no notification that you can stop steering a direction, like in a car.  I’ll probably just use a normal controller.  But we’ll see!   The current release date is still undefined, as just Spring 2008.  Europe is getting it on April 11, so cross your fingers it won’t be long after.

The coolest video you will ever see

I feel like attempting to describe this would never do it justice, so I’ll just let this video speak for itself:

There are more videos where that came from. You’ve been warned.

The rise and fall of Slimer

Slimer1When Ghostbusters debuted in 1984, it featured some of the best effects of the time combined with some of the biggest names in comedy. Some really remarkable sequence were created thanks to some cutting edge effects (for the time). One notable creature was Slimer, who was discovered haunting a fancy hotel until he got all ‘busted. In this film he is never actually referred to as Slimer - he was never given a name. You may remember Bill Murray attempting the tablecloth trick in the dining room where they finally corner him. He also slimes Bill Murray (probably where the name came from, afterwards he utters “I’ve been slimed.”). In fact, I’d recommend rewatching Ghostbusters as soon as possible. So he gets trapped, the trap lights up, and we’re good. Or so we think. Late in the film, the EPA forces the Ghostbusters to release all ghosts in containment, and Slimer is back on the prowl. Thats where we are left off when the first movie ends at least. Popular hollywood mythology states that John Belushi was originally intended to star in the film, and Slimer is an homage to him. Pikmin in Smash Bros.

pikminA new fighter has been announced on Smash Bros. Dojo, Captain Olimar and his Pikmin friends. From the brief description given on the site, he will be able to pull the Pikmin from the ground and briefly use their abilities, or at least get them to help him in some way.

I was under the impression that in the original Gamecube game, Olimar was very, very tiny - I suppose that is a “suspension of disbelief moment.” I suppose a game where an italian plumber, an interstellar bounty hunter, a fantasy elf, a giant anthropomorphized monkey and a space faring fox all meet up to fight, I can let this one go too.

Goldeneye (N64) coming to the Xbox Live Arcade?

Goldeneye360There is currently speculation around the internet (possibly starting at Xbox-Evolved) that Rare’s Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64 is headed to Xbox’s Live Arcade service. They claim that the game will be enhanced for high definition resolutions and include an online play option that was missing from the original game (due to the 64’s obvious lack of online capabilites.)

Electronics Gaming Monthly, one of the better known gamer magazines recently ran a rumor to this effect, but stated that the port was canceled at the last minute for unknown reasons.

The post also claimed that some of Rare’s other popular virtual console titles will make an appearance on XBLA, including Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie.

I think releasing these titles on XBLA is a great thing for a (somewhat) old school gamer who fondly looks back on High School all nighters at friend’s houses playing 007 split-screened. Hopefully now, people will have forgotten the maps and weapon spawn locations they used to repeatedly sneak up and head shot me. Plus, the addition of online capabilities means I can be silently assassinated by complete strangers!

New Look

I told you I’d be changing things until I got comfortable with it.  I feel like this ‘look’ suits me more (and looks less like a high school computer science project).

Paramount ‘poised’ to leave the sinking ship!

BluRayHDDVD With the recent announcement that Warner Bros. is abandoning the HD-DVD format, many people saw the HD format wars coming to an end. Apparently, so does Paramount, one of the only HD-DVD holdouts. There is a clause in its contract that allows them to bail if they see the format failing, and they are planning to do just that. It couldn’t come at a better time! I just got a PS3. I watched Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban last night and have to say that peopl who claim that an HD disc format isn’t a noticeable step up from regular DVD are just fooling themselves. Dark scenes look phenomenal, Buckbeak’s feathers looked great, I really think it enhanced the film. I’m just glad I didn’t watch one of the first 2 Harry Potters as my Blu-ray test, as the effects in those are awful. But I will go much more into that later. For now, there is one remaining holdout in the HD-DVD camp.
